By talking to friends I realised, I’m nearly the only person outside the bubble of occupational und physical therapist. Instead of being an outsider, I decided to make a look, where is potential for improvement. By realising how many tools are on the market for practice of therapist, I took a look in the apprenticeship. Every student need to be part of several internships in different practices and hospitals. By talking with my friends I was shocked, how many schools are working with Excel (or much worse: pen and paper). Also in the documentation of the internships by students is paper one of the most important materials (by now).
The mission was clear: Make the schools für therapist more digital!
But where should I start? The first idea was to make the documentation of the internships digital by offer a tool for students to write everything on one platform. By starting analysing these business case I realise, this could be every tool like Pages or Word because the other side, the schools, are not part of a digital workflow. Even if this is a passion drive project, I need some revenue to fix my cost and I don’t see a business case by selling a Pages-alterntative to students.
By thinking about this I take a close look to the schools. By a friend, I get the possibility to talk directly with a school for physical therapy and got the first input: To I started to develop a simple master data management for classes, students and internship locations. For the planning with pen and paper, I created the first real feature that show the planner in the school on a map, where the internship location is and the students live. The next benefit for schools in Mediskill was the internship planning. A school can see, where and when a student is while the internship (https://mediskill.de/praktikumsplanung). For every department (like psychiatric) the teacher can configure the hours a student must complete and can see, how many hours are left to finish the internship for a department.
It feels like a starting signal: There was a good technical base and the first feature. The next steps was creating the automatic planning and the student portal (https://mediskill.de/schuelerportal). With every step I learned more about architecture, software development and UI-/UX-Design in combination with sales, what is important for the customer and which legal rules need to be taken into consideration. Everything I learned in theory before, I use in the practice in my own company. The responsibility is on an other level, everything is in my hand and I am responsible for every mistake. But also responsible for every win!
Not every idea made it into the productive platform (for now). By thinking about getting more publicity, I thought about a free feature for students with a benefit for their apprenticeship. The idea: An AI-Chatbot with the simulation of a session for occupational and physical therapist, where the patient have a specific problem the student can select. I was really proud about this feature, but with this feature, I would left the focus of the product: Planning the daily business in schools.
By time, every feature is getting better with every iteration and new features deployed time by time. I am really proud, especially because there are real people I can help every day with Mediskill.
